Broadway Kicks off Awards Season

May 1, 2013 - Broadways biggest players gather to honor their own in various awards ceremonies celebrating the best of the best this past season.

The 67th Annual Tony Awards will take place on June 9 at the Beacon Theatre. Nominations were announced April 30th by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sutton Foster. The nominees for Best Musical include: Bring It On: The Musical, A Christmas Story the Musical, Kinky Boots and Matilda the Musical.

The Drama Desk Awards will take place on May 19 at The Town Hall and honor achievement by professional theatre artists on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway. Two musicals with nine nominations each (the most this season) are Hands on a Hardbody and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

The Drama League Awards, the only major theatregoers’ awards chosen by audience members, will hold its 79th annual ceremony on May 17 at the Marriott Marquis. This year, hosted by David Hyde Pierce, the event will award special recognitions to Bernadette Peters, Jerry Mitchell, and Madison Square Garden Entertainment & The Rockettes and include presenters Mary Tyler Moore and Cyndi Lauper.

The Lucille Lortel Awards will take place May 5 at the NYU Skirball Center. The ceremony honors Off-Broadway achievements in 14 categories. Leading the nominations this year are The Piano Lesson and Murder Ballad. The event will be hosted by screen actors Aasif Mandvi and Maura Tierney and will once again benefit The Actors Fund.
