August 1, 2012 - This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Central Park Conservancy Film Festival. Each summer, over the course of one week in August, New Yorkers flock to the park and set down picnic blankets to celebrate the remaining weeks of summer. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘cult classics,’ featuring films that captivate audiences with unique stories and innovative techniques.
Tuesday, August 21: Do the Right Thing (1989), directed by Spike Lee, takes place over the course of the hottest day of the year in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
Wednesday, August 22: Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985) is the story of a man-child, played by Paul Reubens, in search of his beloved bicycle, which was stolen from him in broad daylight.
Thursday, August 23: The Big Lebowski (1998) features Jeff Bridges as the Dude, who is dragged into a seedy world of blackmail and kidnapping when he is mistaken for a millionaire.
Friday, August 24: Animal House (1978), the standard bearer of collegiate films, tells of the misadventures of the Delta Tau Chi Fraternity.
Saturday, August 25: VIEWER’S CHOICE Voting takes place online where people can choose between Coming to America (1988) or Clerks (1994). Coming to America features Eddie Murphy as an African prince who visits New York in order to find a wife. Clerks, the debut film of Kevin Smith, tells the story of two average store clerks in New Jersey who try and find ways to entertain and distract themselves from their ordinary lives.
The movies are shown in the landscape north of Sheep Meadow. Enter the park at 72nd Street. The event is free, and attendees are encouraged to turn the outing into a picnic. Visit centralparknyc.org/visit/things-to-do/family-community/cpc-film-festival.html to learn more.
