Applications Are Now Open for the City's Training Grants and Executive Education Program for Local Media and Entertainment Companies

July 1, 2012 - The New York City Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment and the Department of Small Business Services have partnered on two initiatives to support the growth of local businesses in the entertainment and media industry: Strategic Steps for Growth and Customized Training. Both programs are designed to help companies in the media and entertainment industry in fields such as post-production, broadcasting, motion picture, radio, TV, video, sound recording, set design, advertising, graphic services and print or digital media services. Companies must be based in the five boroughs to be eligible to apply for either program.

Strategic Steps for Growth: Media and Entertainment
This executive education program, designed for media and entertainment entrepreneurs, is a nine-month long course that will provide business executives with an opportunity to gain knowledge through an award-winning curriculum, where each executive uses his/her own company as their business case study. Licensed from the non-profit organization Interise, the program covers finance, strategic planning, marketing and sales, human resources, access to capital, industry networking and joint venturing. Other benefits include peer-to-peer learning, networking opportunities and guidance from experts in the media and entertainment fields and capital providers.

Instructed by the Executive Director of the Entertainment, Media and Technology Program at NYU’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business, the course consists of thirteen three-hour classes that meet one evening every other week, seven CEO mentoring group meetings, professional networking events, reading assignments and homework. Through the program’s partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the tuition fee has been reduced by 50% to $500. At the end of the program, each entrepreneur will emerge with a three-year Strategic Growth Action Plan™ and a network of other entrepreneurs, business leaders and industry resources.

Applications are not being accepted at this time, but interested candidates can e-mail strategicsteps@sbs.nyc.gov to be placed on a notification list for the next round of recruiting. To learn more about eligibility qualifications and the application process, click here.

Customized Training Grants for Media and Entertainment Companies in NYC
These grants are geared toward funding specialized skill training needed in the post-production field and other industry-related companies. Companies will identify the skills their employees need in order to improve their companies’ performance. The City will then help each applicant create a proposal for specialized training to add these skills to the company. If awarded, funding from the City can cover up to 70% of a company’s training costs.
