Honoring the Season's Productions on and off Broadway
June 5, 2012 - As the Broadway community gets ready for the Tony Awards this month, various awards and honors have been handed out in recent weeks.
At the 78th Annual Drama League Awards, Other Desert Cities won for Distinguished Play while Death of a Salesman took home the honor for Distinguished Revival of a Play. Once won for Distinguished Production of a Musical, and the award for Distinguished Revival of a Musical went to Follies. Audra McDonald, currently starring in Porgy and Bess, was presented with the Distinguished Performance prize.
Honoring productions Off-Broadway, the 27th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were handed out to Sons of the Prophet (Outstanding Play), The Cherry Orchard (Outstanding Revival), An Illiad (Outstanding Solo Show) and Once (Outstanding Musical). The lifetime achievement award was given to Richard Frankel, a producer whose credits include recent revivals of A Little Night Music, The Norman Conquests, Company and Sweeney Todd.
The New York Drama Critic’s Circle Awards, chosen by the theatrical critics at local newspapers, magazines and websites, honored Sons of the Prophet as Best Play, Tribes as Best Foreign Play and Once as Best Musical. Special citations were given to the Signature Theatre Company, which recently completed a major expansion, and director Mike Nichols, whose latest work is the revival of Death of a Salesman.
The 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards were given out to Once (New Musical), Death of a Salesman (Outstanding Revival of a Play), Tribes (Outstanding Play), and Follies (Outstanding Revival of a Musical). Special awards were given to actress Mary Testa, actor Nick Westrate, the New Victory Theatre, and playwright Stephen Karam, who was honored with the Sam Norkin Off Broadway Award.
The 66th Annual Tony Awards will air on CBS on June 10, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.
