Tony Awards Honor Broadway's Brightest
July 8, 2010 - The 64th Annual Tony Awards, held at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 13, brought the 2009-2010 Broadway season to a dazzling close. Memphis, a musical about segregation and love in the 1950s, won Best Musical, and Red, a two-man play about the American artist Mark Rothko, won for Best Play.
Stars from the silver screen took home several top honors this year. Catherine Zeta-Jones won the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her role of Desirée Armfeldt in A Little Night Music. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis won Tonys for Best Performance by a Leading Actor and Actress, respectively, for their performances in the revival of August Wilson’s Fences. Scarlett Johansson received a Tony for her role as Catherine in the Arthur Miller play, A View from the Bridge.
Best Revival of a Musical went to La Cage aux Folles, and Best Revival of a Play went to Fences. Actor Douglas Hodge, imported from the West End to play Albin in La Cage, received a Tony to match his Olivier award for his starring role. The 2010 Tony Awards for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre were presented to playwright and director Alan Ayckbourn, and Tony Award-winning actress Marian Seldes.
