Latest Qualified Facility 'Centers' on Production

August 3, 2009 - Located on the corner of Washington and West Houston Streets near the High Line, the St. John’s Center is the latest studio space to be named a qualified production facility under the “Made in NY” incentive program.

The St. John’s Freight Terminal, as it was originally known, was built in 1935 as part of the New York Central Railroad and the terminus for the High Line. It was used as an office and warehouses in the 1960s until Merrill Lynch took over two-thirds of the building and used it as its worldwide data-center.

Forty years later, the space has now been converted into four stages and seven production offices. Among its special features are high ceilings, favorable column spacing, loading docks, and convenient parking in nearby garages and Pier 40. Additionally, the production offices have windows and upgraded fixtures. Its location is another asset; it’s right across from the Holland Tunnel on the West Side Highway, the subway is a few blocks away, and a City bus stops in front of the building.

St. John’s Center has only been a qualified production facility for a couple of months, and already productions from Paramount Pictures, Columbia Pictures, CBS Films, and HBO have used the stages there.
