NewFest Celebrates 21st Festival at SVA Theater

June 1, 2009 - NewFest, the New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender film festival rolls out the red carpet for its 21st returning season. From June 4–11 directors, actors, producers, film fans, and LGBT supporters unite over a series of films, round table discussions, master classes and mixers at both the SVA Theater on 23rd Street in Chelsea and the new Logo Lounge located directly across the street.

“2009 proved to be a very exciting year for NewFest,” said NewFest Board President Louie Anchondo. Not only do we have a new Acting Executive Director, former board member and documentary filmmaker Lesli Klainberg, and a brand new theater venue, but we also added the Logo Lounge, thus creating a new home base for NewFest in the heart of Chelsea- and we couldn't think of a better location!”

NewFest’s centerpiece film on Saturday, June 6, Rivers Wash Over Me, directed by John G. Young, features a gay teen from NYC and the devastating challenges he faces when he’s sent to live with family in the American South. Racial and sexual politics take their toll on a family, and ultimately a community, in this unique and powerful drama about coming to terms with ones self against terrible odds.

“We at Logo are truly proud to be a part of NewFest, one of the most successful lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered film festivals in the world,” said Lisa Sherman, EVP and General Manager of Logo. “The Logo Lounge will serve as an active an important hub for this year’s NewFest and all who are a part of it.”

As one of New York City's premier LGBT arts organizations for over twenty years, NewFest empowers, educates, entertains, and provokes the culturally rich and diverse communities of the greater metropolitan region. Through its annual film festival and year-round programming, NewFest showcases international, US, and local filmmakers and fosters a greater sense of awareness and community LGBT-friendly audiences.

NewFest will take place from Thursday, June 4 thru Thursday, June 11 and will be held at the School of Visual Arts Theater (333 W 23rd St. near 8th Ave). The Logo Lounge will be located at 338 23rd Street and open all the hours of the festival. Full program, schedule, and ticketing information is available online at
