In Previews: New Shows Begin Performances on Broadway in February

February 2, 2009 - Throughout the month of February, a number of Broadway shows will begin preview performances.

The Story of My Life begins performances February 3 and will open on February 19 at the Booth Theatre. Will Chase and Malcolm Gets star as lifelong friends, one a best-selling writer and the other a quirky bookstore owner.

With classics like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat,” the revival of Guys and Dolls will roll the dice at the Nederlander Theatre beginning on February 4. Oliver Platt and Lauren Graham headline the cast; the show opens March 1.

Jane Fonda returns to Broadway with 33 Variations as a musicologist trying to decipher a mystery surrounding Beethoven. The play begins previews at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on February 9 and opens March 9 for a limited engagement.

The revival of West Side Story dances its way to the Palace Theatre with performances beginning February 23. The classic re-telling of Romeo and Juliet will feature select songs translated into Spanish. The musical opens on March 19.

Mediums, séances, and an unwanted specter will take up residence at the Shubert Theater when Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit begins performances on February 26. Angela Lansbury, Rupert Everett and Christine Ebersole are among the cast. The play opens on March 15.

James Gandolfini, Marcia Gay Harden, Jeff Daniels, and Hope Davis play two sets of parents whose behavior match that of their unruly children in God of Carnage. Previews begin at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 28; the play opens on March 22.

Impressionism, a new play by Michael Jacobs, makes its debut at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre starring Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen. Previews begin February 28 and opens March 12.

In other news, The Phantom of the Opera just celebrated its 21st anniversary on Broadway. On January 26th, the longest-running show in Broadway history played its 8,732nd performance.
