At the Stage Door: Broadway Openings in November

November 5, 2008 - Musicals, revivals and a green ogre will find themselves appearing on Broadway this month.

Speed-the-Plow is currently treading the boards at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Taking aim at Hollywood, the David Mamet play stars Jeremy Piven, Raúl Esparza, and Elisabeth Moss.

The green ogre makes his debut on Broadway as Shrek the Musical premieres at the Broadway Theatre. Previews begin on November 8 for this musical based on the popular animated film.

Billy Elliot, the movie-turned-West End hit, crosses the pond on November 13 at the Imperial Theatre. The musical, with music by Elton John, tells the tale of a little boy who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, based on the classic holiday film, makes it Broadway debut at the Marquis Theatre. Performances begin on November 14 with an official opening date of November 23.

Stockard Channing, Christian Hoff, and Martha Plimpton headline Pal Joey, which features the Rogers and Hart classic “Bewitched.” The musical begins previews on November 14 at Studio 54 and opens on December 11.

David Mamet’s American Buffalo opens at the Belasco Theatre on November 17. John Leguizamo, Cedric the Entertainer, and Haley Joel Osment star in the play about an old nickel, a pawnshop, and three thieves.

The work of Horton Foote returns to Broadway with Dividing the Estate at the Booth Theatre on November 20. The play focuses on a family who must contend with its future and the ramifications of its past.

Liza Minnelli returns to the stage with Liza’s at the Palace…! beginning on December 3. The famed singer will share her favorite songs and memories at the Palace Theatre for a month’s worth of performances.

Young theatre-goers should mark their calendars for November 10. That’s when tickets for 2009’s Kids Night on Broadway go on sale. Beginning on February 3 and 4, 2009, young people age 6-18 will have the opportunity to see a Broadway show for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult.
