September 2, 2008 - Vanguard artists have long looked to the street for inspiration, subject matter, a stage, and often, the raw materials of their art making. This fall, head uptown to view the incarnation of the muse at The Bronx Museum of the Arts’ newest exhibition Street Art, Street Life: From the 1950s to Now.

Curated by Lydia Yee, curator at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, Street Art, Street Life masterfully displays boulevards and pathways from New York to Beijing and beyond.

This far-ranging exhibition includes street photography; documentation of performances, events, and artworks presented in the street; works using material from the street; and examples of street culture by more than thirty artists, including William Klein, Yoko Ono, Lee Friedlander, Raymond Hains, Vito Acconci, Martha Rosler, Sophie Calle, David Hammons, Jamel Shabazz, and Francis Alÿs, among others.

Hit the streets with the Bronx Museum of the Arts at the opening of Street Art, Street Life on Sunday, September 14, from 12 – 6pm. Enjoy a street fair on the sidewalk in front of the Museum featuring a live D.J. and performances, arts activities for families, purveyors of local cuisines, and native artisans.

Founded in 1971, The Bronx Museum of the Arts focuses on 20th-century and contemporary art, while serving the culturally diverse populations of the Bronx and the greater New York metropolitan area. The Bronx Museum of the Arts maintains a permanent collection of 20th and 21st-century works by artists of African, Asian, and Latin American ancestry.
