Broadway Soars to New 'Heights'

June 16, 2008 - In the Heights and August: Osage County took home top honors at the 62nd Annual Tony Awards, which handed out prizes at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 15. In the Heights, a homegrown musical set in Washington Heights that mixes salsa, hip hop, and rap, won for Best Musical while August: Osage Country, this year’s Pulitzer Winner for drama, was awarded Best Play.

The 1960s sex farce Boeing-Boeing won Best Revival of a Play as did its lead actor, Mark Rylance for Best Actor in a Play. The first Broadway revival of Roger and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, now playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, won seven Tonys, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical for its director Bartlett Sher, and Best Actor in a Play, Paulo Szot. Patti LuPone received the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance of Momma Rose in Gypsy.
