March 3, 2008 - The Museum of the Moving Image is currently undergoing an expansion and renovation project that will double the current size of the museum, transforming the first floor and creating a new three-story addition. With its on-site activities curtailed during the renovation, the museum will continue to provide the public with a diverse and exciting array of off-site screenings, discussions, and family and community programs in all five boroughs.

Preview screenings of award-contending films, many of them featuring discussions with their directors and stars, will continue at movie theaters in Manhattan. The monthly series of talks, panels, and special programs at The Times Center in Manhattan will also continue. Researchers and scholars will have access to the museum’s collection of more than 130,000 objects, and a number of major online programs are planned for 2008, including The Living Room Candidate and Moving Image Source.

“With this groundbreaking, the Museum of the Moving Image is about to enter an exciting new era of programming and service,” stated Rochelle Slovin, Director of the Museum.

Designing the project is the New York-based firm of Leeser Architecture. The museum expects to open again in late 2009. Visit http://www.movingimage.us/ for more information.
