Creating Theatre Lovers at an Early Age: Kids' Night on Broadway

February 1, 2008 - Kids’ Night on Broadway hits the Great White Way on February 5, 6, 12, and 13, 2008. Organized by The Broadway League, Kids’ Night on Broadway lets kids aged 6 to 18 see a Broadway show for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult.

“Kids’ Night on Broadway is the most popular audience development program of The Broadway League,” said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League. “Kids’ Night carries the message that Broadway is an open and accessible experience for both kids and adults. In the 2006-2007 season, children and teens accounted for a record 1.42 million tickets sold in New York alone.”

According to a recent League study, sixty-five percent of Broadway theatregoers said that their parents or other adult family members took them to the theatre as a child or teenager. Similarly, having parents or adult family members who attended the theatre themselves was also influential on future theatregoers.

This year, a Fan Festival kicks off with a party at Madame Tussauds on February 5th, hosted by the cast and crew of participating shows for families who have purchased Kid’s Night tickets. Young theatregoers will have the chance to tour Madame Tussauds, join in on Broadway dance lessons and karaoke, and collect Broadway signatures in Autograph Alley.

At the Spotlight Live events on February 6th and 12th, kids are invited to be a part of the show with Camp Broadway and learn what it takes to bring Broadway to life eight times a week. Kids are also invited to sing Broadway karaoke and win great prizes.

The final event on February 13th will be held at the newly built New York Times Theatre. Camp Broadway will be on hand as kids are invited to be a part of history with members of the cast of Legally Blonde when they attempt to set the Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest “Bend and Snap.”

Area restaurants will offer family-friendly dinner discounts with a free entrée for each child accompanied by an adult who purchased a regularly priced entrée. Special parking discounts will also be available.
