LIFE Imitating Art, New Academy Inspires Students through Film

January 2, 2008 - The LIFE Academy High School for Film & Music opened in September in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn with an innovative, inspired goal: to use the study of filmmaking, audio production, and new media as a vehicle to encourage students to think critically while developing their artistic voices. Beginning with a ninth grade class of fifty-four, LIFE is living by its acronym, “Learning Integrating Film and Education,” with students receiving instruction in the core NYC Department of Education curriculum as well as classes and workshops in the areas of film and music production.

In partnership with the Institute for Student Achievement (ISA), LIFE seeks to empower students to achieve their goals through collaboration, inquiry-based project learning, and a dynamic curriculum. In a small, safe, college-preparatory environment, students pursue their learning in an atmosphere supported by the entire school community. School leaders work in collaboration with teachers, parents, special service providers, support staff, and neighborhood partners to meets students’ individual needs.

“We strive to make learning interesting and relevant, to capture students’ imaginations and provide outlets for creative expression, all the whole focusing on communication skills and positive citizenship,” said the school’s principal, Kaia Mashariki.

Going forward, the team at LIFE Academy hope to build relationships within the media and entertainment industry. They are off to a great start—in October, six students traveled to Los Angeles, California to volunteer at Film Life’s American Black Film Festival, where they were able to network and witness the inner workings of the film business first hand.

At home in Brooklyn, the faculty hopes to curate a regular colloquium series of guest speakers from different areas of production, including directing, editing, acting, producing, and design.
