MOFTB, Apollo Theater, and Warner Bros. Pictures Announce Free Screening of "August Rush" Followed by Entertainment Career Panel for Students

November 1, 2007 - On Monday, November 12, the New York City Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, in conjunction with Warner Bros. Pictures and the Apollo Theater Foundation, will present “Careers in Entertainment: August Rush,” at the Apollo Theater. The event consists of a screening of the Warner Bros. film, August Rush, followed by a panel discussion in which the film’s director, Academy Award nominee Kirsten Sheridan, along with other members of the production team, will speak to students about working in the entertainment production industry. The panel will be free of charge.

August Rush is the story of a charismatic young Irish guitarist (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and a sheltered young cellist (Keri Russell) who have a chance encounter one magical night above New York’s Washington Square. They are soon torn apart, however, leaving in their wake an infant, orphaned by circumstance. Years later, performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger (Robin Williams) who gives him the name August Rush, the child (Freddie Highmore) uses his remarkable musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth.

Following the screening, Commissioner Oliver will moderate a panel discussion with director Kirsten Sheridan and other members of her production team, each of whom represent different sectors of the entertainment production industry. Panelists include:

Kirsten Sheridan, Director (DISCO PIGS, AUGUST RUSH; Screenwriter: IN AMERICA)

Richard Lewis, Producer (THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE, BROOKLYN RULES)

Mark Mancina, Composer (SHOOTER, TRAINING DAY)

John Davis, Storyboard Artist (THE DEPARTED, JUST MY LUCK)

The event begins at 10:00am. Doors open at 9:00am. Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis with a valid student ID. RSVP to message@film.nyc.gov by Thursday, November 8th. This event is presented in collaboration with Career Day at the Apollo, part of the Apollo Theater Education & Community Outreach Program.
