June 30, 2004 - For Locations Manager Carla Raij, who has been working in New York City’s film industry for over a decade, there is no better set than the City. Ms. Raij has worked on over 20 films shot in some of New York City’s most incredible locations over the years, including Central Park, Times Square, Trump Tower, Wall Street and Trinity Church.
Most recently, she worked on the feature film Stay, which was shot on the Brooklyn Bridge for two weeks.
"Everyone knows the Brooklyn Bridge, and we wanted it for its architectural significance and iconic value," she said. "The Brooklyn Bridge is a character in this film."
Ms. Raij worked with the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting to gain unprecedented access to the roadways of the Bridge for production, and said that she was not surprised when the City delivered the location for the shoot.
"From the outset, the City made it clear that if the Brooklyn Bridge was what we wanted, the Brooklyn Bridge was what we’d get," she said.
For Ms. Raij, the value of shooting on location in New York City is the character and energy of the City. "Even with something like an alleyway, which you could try to cheat in Toronto, when you film in New York you have a level of authenticity that is irreplaceable," she said.
"There’s something about New York City that permeates every visual image captured on film. It’s unexplainable, you just know it. You can’t duplicate it and you can’t build it."
Ms. Raij’s next project is Tru Blu. The production is transforming a street in Harlem back to the way it looked in the 1970s. She said the value of shooting on the streets of the City is the diversity it offers.
"On every block in New York City it seems that every ethnicity is represented," she said. "It’s a city that still has that. And for the same reasons it's my favorite place to work, New York City is also the only place I want to live."
