Kitty Preston - Bringing College Campuses to Your Computer

By Jorge Hernandez
May 1, 2007 - Kitty Preston’s entry into the world of production locations was a bit of a happy accident. Preston, Productivity Special Assistant for the City University of New York Location Shoots, came to the bright lights of New York City as a singer and dancer.

But for the past few years, Preston's gotten off the stage and behind the scenes, compiling information on CUNY location spaces in preparation for making them available online. On Friday, May 11, CUNY is releasing CUNY Location Shoots, which will allow location scouts to view photos of CUNY campuses by college or location subject matter.

Preston began this long journey of getting locations to your laptop after meeting Ronald Spalter, Deputy Chief Operating Officer for CUNY Schools and a neighbor. Spalter is a man, Preston explains, whose philosophy is to increase productivity.

“He brought in people he thought he could work with. He’s an idea person – he throws out so many, and one of his big ideas was to use CUNY’s amazing real estate and make our organization more approachable to filmmakers,” said Preston.

It was during this time that Preston really came to understand the sheer diversity provided by the CUNY college locations.

“One of the biggest requests we get is for locker room space,” says Preston. “But we have so many of these facilities that productions can have their pick. We have a number of medical facilities as well.”

“We also have a new graduate school for journalism. It has a fully equipped newsroom and studio. It could be a flat-out facsimile of Rockefeller Center studios. We also have a turn-of-the century bowling alley at one of our campuses. A turn of the century bowling alley! If only bowling alleys could be designated historical landmarks!”
