Jeannette Pinero, Department of Correction
September 1, 2005 - Correction Officer Jeannette Pinero has been helping productions shoot in City jails without hold ups for the past nine years. She started her career as a correction officer with the department 18 years ago.
The New York City Department of Correction makes its facilities available free of charge for production. Currently, the Queens House of Detention, a closed 400 bed facility, is available for production, along with the James Thomas Center on Riker’s Island, the original 1935 correction facility which has of late become a star in “Law & Order,” “Analyze This” and “Analyze That.”
Ms. Pinero is also able to coordinate correction equipment including vehicles and inmate uniforms for production. The department works to facilitate a simple request and scouting process and expedite requests for filming.
For Ms. Pinero, the value of correction facilities is the realistic feel they lend to shoots. “When you shoot in actual facilities, you get the full effect,” she said. “The long corridors in these facilities are extremely intimidating, and the small cells are gloomy and dull. When productions try to recreate this on stages, if you look closely you always find something that is off.”
