Donna Masly: Giving Filmmakers a New Deal at Roosevelt Island By Jorge Hernandez March 1, 2007 - Roosevelt Island has been everything from a private island owned by the descendants of a New York sheriff, to a government controlled property meant for municipal institutions like prisons, poor houses, and nursing homes. Now, Roosevelt Island is a residential community offering apartments with a breathtaking view of midtown and the Upper East Side. It is the high demand for the view, and a few other island features, that Donna Masly oversees. Masly, Program Assistant for the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation, is in charge of issuing field permits for recreation and film projects on the island. “I mostly deal with field permits, and a large part of that is renting out fields to various softball leagues,” explains Masly. Masly, a Rutgers University graduate, has focused her career on recreation. “I started at operations in The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers. I was heavily involved in recreation in college, and I happened to see an opening [at RIOC]. In her role as permit supervisor with the RIOC, however, Masly has dedicated herself to working with film/TV productions and getting Roosevelt Island on camera. “[Our hope] is to create a positive experience for people who film here,” said Masly. “We want to showcase the things we have – an array of areas to film.” The island features a number of popular locations, including Coler-Goldwater Memorial Hospital, Southpoint Park, and the iconic Roosevelt Island Tram. The Southpoint Park and tram are particularly eye-catching for productions because they offer, as Masly puts it, “beautiful views of the city, the United Nations' building and the Citigroup building. We get many calls to film on the tram because lots of [productions from] other countries like to do travel specials on New York City, and the tram is a big attraction.” But what excites Masly most is what the island’s future holds. The RIOC is “in the process of re-doing Southpoint Park,” explains Masly. “It will be a much more accessible area. There will be bigger filming opportunities, cleaner shots – it will look much more like a park.” Still, Masly doesn’t want anyone to forget that the time to film on Roosevelt Island is now. “The views of Manhattan are unparalleled. We have helpful, friendly staff here too,” said Masly. “That’s why you should film on Roosevelt Island.” She also said the Roosevelt Island Tram is available for film shoots but she must be notified far in advance.
