Jeannine Marotta, Director of Development for the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation

March 3, 2008 - In just three years, the Staten Island Film Festival has grown in size and stature, and much of that is due to the efforts of Jeannine Marotta.

As the Director of Development for the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation, Marotta oversees the planning and implementation of the festival along with the SI EDC’s other events and fund raising projects. “The festival takes about a year to plan,” said Marotta. This involves everything from determining venues, screening the entries, marketing the event, and reaching out to filmmakers and the audience.

According to Marotta, the Staten Island Film Festival grew out of a desire to celebrate films and promote arts and culture on Staten Island to a local and world audience. Each year, Marotta and her team try to improve the festival and bring more attention to it in the outer boroughs.

“We’re reaching out to more and more people,” said Marotta, who added that last year, 7,000 people attended the festival. Hundreds of films have already been submitted, and this year for the first time, the festival will also feature screenings off-island in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

On Staten Island, films will be screened in six theatres at the College of Staten Island from June 5-8. The festival also includes a career panel presented by the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting at the St. George Theatre. In addition, this year the festival will feature a striking new logo, a branding piece to promote the borough entitled SINY.

“We want the other boroughs to get a taste of what Staten Island has to offer,” said Marotta. “Remember we’re just a ferry ride away.”
