Laurence Major: Greenlighting Parks Projects
January 1, 2005 - Laurence Major greenlights projects to shoot on Parks and Recreation property. Mr. Major, a Manager who has been with the agency for 18 years, handles all requests for shooting at Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn. During his busy summer months, he often accommodates 15-20 different projects per week.
Coney Island is the most popular of the City’s seven beaches, attracting nine million visitors per year. “Coney Island is truly the playground of the world,” Mr. Major said. “It’s a demographically diverse area that showcases the energy and multiculturalism of New York City.”
Mr. Major said the beach is also perfect for filming. “The area is very picturesque and offers filmmakers flexible shots and angles and a lot of open space to work with,” he said.
Mr. Major handles requests for filming on both the beach and the boardwalk, which offers a lively backdrop of eateries and game stands. He also helps filmmakers liaise with the owners of Deno’s Wonder Wheel amusement park on the boardwalk, which includes Deno’s Wonder Wheel, a New York City landmark; as well as Astroland amusement park, which operates the Cyclone, also a New York City landmark.
He has assisted productions including Two Weeks Notice with Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock, for which a helicopter landed on the boardwalk, and Lord of War with Nicholas Cage, for which a beauty pageant contestant in the film rode in a convertible over the beach.
“Anyone can identify with Coney Island, and it is exciting to have a part in bringing a part of New York City to audiences around the world,” he said.
