In Memoriam - Nancy Littlefield

August 1, 2007
- During the late 70’s, shooting a film in New York could be a mess of red tape, as filmmakers and others had to go through a number of different agencies for shooting permission. Mayor Edward I. Koch realized that the city was missing an important sector of its economy by not doing what it could to encourage filmmaking. Upon his entry into the office, he realized he needed someone to untangle the confusing approval process, and sought someone with extensive industry experience.

Nancy Littlefield was appointed Executive Director of the City’s film office (at the time called the Mayor’s Office of Motion Pictures and Television) by Mayor Koch. Once Ms. Littlefield took the post, she was determined to streamline the process and encourage filmmakers to come back to New York.

According to the New York Times, in “1977, the year before Ms. Littlefield took the post, just 42 feature films were shot in New York City. The next year, the figure rose to 79; the year after that, to 97.” Estimates show that in 1979, the film, television, and commercial industry brought half a billion dollars to the city.

Littlefield was brought into the role based on merit, not political affiliations. She was one of the first women admitted into the Directors Guild of America, taught film classes at Columbia University, New York University, The New School, and the University of Southern California. Ms. Littlefield died Thursday, August 30th.

While it’s unusual for Industry Stars of the Month to be highlighted post-humously, the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting would not be the organization it is today without her leadership. We’d like to offer our condolences to all of Ms. Littlefield’s friends and family, and to emphasize how valuable her legacy is to the MOFTB.
