Vin Lenza
Vin Lenza, Selling Staten Island
June 1, 2006 – As Vin Lenza, Deputy Director of the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation, has organized the first Staten Island Film Festival, he has found that this week’s event will not only have an economic impact on the borough in its own right, but is also raising the profile of Staten Island as a destination for filmmaking.
Lenza, who has been with the agency for more than three years, conceives of the festival as an opportunity to promote Staten Island as an artistic destination and celebrate the variety of communities within the borough. He expects it to generate some 3,000-5,000 attendees.
“The real impact of the event is the buzz it has generated,” Lenza said. “People both on and off the island are talking about it.”
The festival is also putting the spotlight on the numerous films that have shot on Staten Island, and locations the borough has to offer. “There’s such a diversity of locations here, from beaches to residential roads that I drive down, and I am surprised every time that I’m actually in New York City.”
Yet for Lenza, the attractiveness of the Island as a destination for entertainment production is also related to the way the borough embraces film crews. “When crews come out to film here, it’s a neighborhood event, and everyone is very excited and accommodating,” he said. Communities and neighborhoods want them to be here, and support them while they’re here.”
