Matthew Kania, Assistant Location Manager
December 5, 2007 - Many people in New York City’s entertainment production community have been around long enough to see how a Broadway show can become a film in a matter of months. Recent adaptations of Angels in America and Closer have made their way to the screen, and soon Doubt, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, will join their ranks.

Finding the appropriate locations that make 2007 New York City look instead like 1964 is the task of Doubt's location team. Matthew Kania, as second assistant location manager for the film, works on set to ensure that filming runs smoothly as each location retains the look of the period. The film, which follows a nun suspicious of a parish priest's involvement with a child, is set in the Bronx in the mid-60s.

Modern architecture can sometimes present a challenge for a period drama, especially one set in a modern city like New York. "There's still a lot of great stuff in the city, but sometimes you have to move to another location or borough because there's something new right next to it," said Kania. "A lot of the areas haven't changed that much though," he added.

Kania, who was an intern at the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, started out as an unit PA four years ago before eventually moving into his current position. "Location managing was always an interesting part of the industry to me," he said. He remembers the location managers who came into the MOFTB from his internship. "I got to see how it was done, the logistics that were involved."

Kania is also sure to keep in mind the impact the production has on local residents. When he's on set, he's mindful to pay attention to how residents would feel coming out of their homes and seeing a film set on the street. If there's a piece of equipment that might be in the way, Kania makes sure it gets moved to ensure residents are inconvenienced as little as possible. It's something he attributes to his time with the MOFTB.

"I knew I wanted to work on film sets," Kania said, and from the experience he gained at the MOFTB and the city’s entertainment industry, he's doing just that.
