Sheila Greene: Keeping the Public Informed About Public Housing
January 1, 2007 - The objective of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is to provide safe and affordable housing for low to moderate income New York City residents. As production has expanded throughout the city, NYCHA, like many other city agencies, has accommodated a growing number of film, television and commercial shoots. Sheila Greene, Director of Communications for NYCHA, helps to coordinate production at Housing Authority properties.

“Mayor Bloomberg has created an environment of encouraging filmmakers,” said Greene. “Given our unique properties and locations we are happy to be a partner in that effort.”

Greene has a long history in city government. “I joined city government in 1990,” she said. “Public Service has been a passion of mine. It may sound corny, but it’s true.” Greene has worked at five different agencies, including the Departments of Employment, Housing Preservation and Development, Human Resources Administration and Juvenile Justice, and also served as chief of staff to David Paterson in his role as state senator.

Currently, Greene’s office is compiling a list of locations it oversees and will work with the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting to distribute this information to filmmakers and production companies. “Public housing is in so many neighborhoods in New York City,” said Greene. “Working with productions maximizes opportunities to showcase what NYCHA has to offer.”

Greene is also committed to spreading the word about the “Made in NY” Production Assistant training program. “The P.A. training program is close to my heart,” said Greene. “Youth in NYCHA housing need to participate. We plan on talking to young residents about the program.”
