Al Cerullo: On Top of NYC Production
June 1, 2004 - Al Cerullo has been taking New York City productions to new heights for over 30 years. As a Film Pilot and Aerial Coordinator, Mr. Cerullo has provided helicopter services to hundreds of television shows, commercials and music videos, and over 300 feature films that have shot in the City over the years.
One of Mr. Cerullo’s most ambitious projects involved bringing in a helicopter to remove Jackie Chan from a speedboat in New York Harbor during the filming of a scene for The Protector. He also landed right in Union Square during the filming of Conspiracy Theory. Most recently, he did background plate shots for Spider-Man 2 and The Day After Tomorrow. When his helicopter is used on camera for shows such as Law & Order, it is often painted to look like the helicopters of the NYPD or other government agencies.
“The best part of the job is the challenge of translating the director's vision into aerials that show off the dynamic beauty that the City offers,” he said. “It’s very gratifying to give audiences this unique perspective of the world's greatest city."
Mr. Cerullo often takes crews on scouting expeditions and films aerial shots of the City and the skyline.
“I’ve flown in numerous cities, but New York is golden, it’s just fabulous,” he said. “When I take people scouting over the City for the first time, the reaction is always the same. They’ve never seen anything like it before.”
Mr. Cerullo credits the City’s beauty and local talent with the film industry’s success. “Filmmakers have everything they need here,” he said. “Why would you go anywhere else?”
