Michael Super, Coney Island, Parks and Recreational Manager
March 1, 2011 - According to Michael Super, there’s something special about Coney Island. “No day is ever the same at Coney Island,” he said. “Every day is different. There are always people out even in the storms. It’s like 42nd Street.”
Super, who’s been with the Parks Department since 1986 and now serves as Coney Island’s Parks and Recreational manager, works with productions when they shoot at Coney Island, making on sites visits with the filmmakers and going step-by-step through the process of location shooting.
“We put them in contact with local businesses and the police precinct so that everyone is in communication,” he said.
“Stillwell Ave is the heart and soul of Coney Island, where everything comes together,” said Super. “It’s upbeat. During the season, we have disco on the boardwalk. It’s like a free party.”
Among Coney Islands’ many sites that attract filmmakers are the Steeplechase, the baseball stadium and Luna Park. There’s also a hidden gem in the old skating rink that used to be a candy factory. “It’s frozen in time with its decorative façade,” said Super.
Super always reminds productions to keep in mind that they share the space with the community.
“Coney Island is an exciting place,” he said. “It’s my first time working at a beach, and now I never want to leave.”
