Meredith Rothstein, Roseland Ballroom
February 2, 2009 -
Although she started working at the Roseland Ballroom only three and a half years ago, Meredith Rothstein’s relationship with New York City's entertainment industry started long before. She got her start on the Times Square restaurant scene organizing special events, only a few blocks away from her current address at the Roseland. In promoting restaurants, she often found herself promoting other neighborhood attractions and Broadway shows to clients and tourists. “I realized how interrelated the restaurant business, tourism and Broadway were” in this popular Midtown neighborhood she says.
Now at the Roseland, she is again working with many of the interrelated fields in the New York entertainment industry. An average week in Meredith’s shoes includes everything from on location film shoots to Broadway rehearsals. The space is the home for the annual Broadway Bares/Equity Fights Aids cabaret, several New York Fashion Week shows, and even music video shoots. “There’s never a boring day,” she said. The Roseland Ballroom is consistently used by all different types of people in the entertainment industry—not just filmmakers—making for a very lively workplace.
The Roseland does present Rothstein some challenges though. A New York institution since 1919, it moved to its current location in 1956 and despite its legacy, “It’s sometimes a challenge to show potential clients that our raw space is better than some of our newer, flashy competitors.”
Given Roseland’s blank canvas, Rothstein works to tailor the space to whatever clients may need—be it a plain rehearsal hall for choreographing a Broadway dance number, or a lavishly decorated space for a film premiere party. Rothstein likes to think of the Roseland as a one-stop-shop for special events. “Catering, rehearsal spaces, a show, a party—we can do it all,” she explained.
For Rothstein, contributing to so many facets of the industry is incredibly rewarding and “working at Roseland is in itself a memorable moment.”
