Dana Kuznetzkoff, Line Producer
May 1, 2009 -
Dana Kuznetzkoff knows New York City. A born and raised New Yorker, Kuznetzkoff has been involved in film and television production ever since she was accepted into the New York DGA Assistant Director Training Program in 1986.
“In New York, you can work on all different types of projects and not be pigeonholed into a TV person or a film person,” she said. Currently, Kuznetzkoff works as the line producer for the new HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”
In addition to producing two internationally acclaimed documentaries, Kuznetzkoff has been fortunate to work on both large scale studio projects and smaller independent projects as well as pay and network television and PBS.
“The unique film community that makes up New York crosses boundaries,” she said. “Whether you're the filmmaker or the technician, there is an energy and compassion that is evident in each project. People here are willing to teach. It is not unusual for a person with absolutely no experience to be standing on a set with an award-winning producer because someone was willing to take a risk.”
She also recommends that people just starting out get involved by joining filmmaking groups and attending local events.
As the vice-chair of the Producers Guild East, Kuznetzkoff continues to be involved with community outreach like mentor programs, the “Made in NY” PA Training Program and the Mayor’s Task Force on Diversity in Film, Television and Commercial Production.
A new initiative for the PGA that Kuznetzkoff was instrumental in launching is PGA Goes Green. “The message that we can reduce waste and clean up our film shoots needs to be shouted from every rooftop,” she said. Through its website –
www.pgagreen.org
– the PGA has created an online meeting place where producers and production professionals can share resources on how to green film, TV and new media productions.
Her favorite part about working in NY? “The people. True New Yorkers are the greatest people in the world.”
