Nate Grove, Marinas
August 2, 2010 -
As the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation senior manager for marinas, Nate Grove manages the public marinas throughout the City and serves as the liaison when productions shoot there. It’s a job that came about from his love for New York City.
A former member of the Harvard crew team, Grove had some experience with boats when he joined the Parks Department seven years ago. The marinas, which include the Boat Basin in Manhattan, Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, and the World’s Fair in Queens, have hosted their fair share of productions over the years, thanks to the views afforded by the water and the unique look of the docked boats. “It’s fun to see your site featured on screen,” he said.
You’ve Got Mail and the Colin Farrell film Pride and Glory shot scenes at the Boat Basin; Shallow Hal with Jack Black spent time at Sheepshead Bay. According to Grove, the most frequent production visitors are TV shows. “We also get a lot of student filming and independent films,” he said.
“Working with productions is a nice outgrowth of promoting boating [in the City],” said Grove, as an additional way of “making people aware we live on an island.”
He also serves as the liaison between filmmakers and the boaters who live there. The marinas are a unique aspect of the City and the Parks Department, he explained, since the docks provide living accommodations year round. Grove works with the productions to remind them that they’re filming in and around people’s homes.
“You spend one-third of your waking day at work – or two-thirds in my case – and you want to like what you do,” he said. “This has been one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve had.”
