Terence Gray, Founder and Head of the New York Television Festival September 2, 2008 - Terence Gray knows television. The founder and head of the New York Television Festival, Gray brings together industry insiders and aspiring independent producers each year in New York City to showcase the best in independent and commercial television. The city was always Gray’s choice for the festival’s home. “New York is the birthplace of television,” he noted. “It’s the most dynamic city in the world. People start their careers here. It’s the proper place to do it.” Since its inception, the festival has grown significantly. In 2005, 200 producers were involved; now there are over 4000 producers in the NYTVF community. Throughout the week, panel discussions, screenings, and special events highlight the television industry’s presence in New York City. Managing a staff of fifteen during the festival, as well as over 120 volunteers, Gray is involved in all levels of planning for the festival and works with the festival’s many sponsors to create dynamic programming. Gray also takes an active role in the selection process of the Independent Pilot Competition, designed to give a boast to indie TV producers. His favorite part of the festival is when artists meet with executives after their pilots have been screened for the first time and the reactions are positive. “The festival really opens the door of professional TV to these artists,” he said.
