McCord Fitzsimmons, Former OFTB Intern
October 3, 2011 - In the summer of 2000, McCord Fitzsimmons interned with the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, and eleven years later, he’s still part of the local entertainment industry.
Fitzsimmons, who now lives in South Park Slope, has fond memories of his time as an intern with OFTB, getting to visit his first TV set and passing “Late Night” band leader Paul Shaffer in the lobby of the Ed Sullivan Theatre building. He had always been interested in production, and his internship, in which he greeted customers and helped them fill out permits, was the perfect opportunity to get hands-on experience about production in New York City.
After he graduated from college in 2003, Fitzsimmons worked for a cable news network and served as a PA on a few movies. He then found his niche as a video assist operator. “It’s kind of like instant replay for the director and the actors,” he explained. He gets a signal from the camera and records the takes. “It helps with archiving and continuity.”
As a video assist operator he’s worked on a number of projects, including Enchanted, I Am Legend, American Gangster and most recently Men in Black 3 and the new Sasha Baron Cohen film.
“Every day is different,” he said. “It’s great to see cool places in New York and work with creative people.”
He also has advice for students looking to get their start in the industry. “Anyone who asks me about getting into the industry, I always tell them to check out the Mayor’s Office,” he said. “It’s helpful because it gives you a good overview of production in general and how it works in New York.”
For those interested in getting into the technical nuts and bolts part of filmmaking, he suggests starting out at one of New York City's many great rental houses. “It’s a good place to learn about the equipment that the industry uses, while also making invaluable contacts.”
The City itself, he said, is an ideal place for film and television. “It can look like so many places with its different landscape. It’s great for filmmakers.”
