Backdrop NYC
August 1, 2007 In the latest season of original programming on NYC-TV, the show Backdrop NYC celebrates the creative energies of New Yorkers. Backdrop NYC invites short film submissions from all New York filmmakers, and then features a selection of New York shorts each episode. Demonstrating the depth and breadth of New York’s film community, the shorts range in style from animation to live action to documentary.


IFP Expands 17th Annual Gotham Awards
August 1, 2007 The 2007 film awards season will kick-off in New York on Tuesday, November 27 with the 17th Annual Gotham Awards. Produced and presented by IFP, the Awards are expanding on two fronts this year with their move to the City’s newest studio complex, Steiner Studios, and with their new collaborations to present public programs related to the Awards. In addition, IFP announced today three of this year’s Gotham Awards Tributes: actor Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Love in the Time of Cholera, Before Night Falls), filmmaker Mira Nair (The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding, Salaam Bombay!) and film industry veteran Jonathan Sehring, President of IFC Entertainment.


New York Movie Pirate First to be Charged with Tougher Camcord Law
August 1, 2007 A New York area man was arrested by New York City police officers prior to the July Fourth holiday for illegally camcording Dreamworks/Paramount’s Transformers on its opening day in a Bronx movie theater. The defendant is the first to be charged under an amended law passed by the City Council and signed into law May 1 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg that increases penalties for individuals caught recording theatrical films in New York City. The defendant, Kalidou Diallo, faces up to six months imprisonment, fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 and a civil penalty up to $5,000.
