Location of the Month: Vinegar Hill Historic District, Brooklyn

According to the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation, Vinegar Hill Historic District consists of three separate groups of brick rowhouses built between the late 1830's and early 1850's in the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. Covering eight blocks close to the Manhattan Bridge anchorage, the area was originally named after the battle of Vinegar Hill of 1798, when the British Army defeated a popular uprising in Ireland. By the late nineteenth-century, the neighborhood was home to Irish immigrants and other ethnic groups who worked on the Brooklyn waterfront.

New Comedy Festival

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced New York City will host the inaugural New York Comedy Festival from November 9th - 13th. The five-day event will feature performances by more than fifty of today's best stand-up comedians at venues throughout the City including Town Hall, Theater at Madison Square Garden, Apollo Theatre, City Center and Beacon Theater.
