December 30, 2004 - The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting was saddened by the death of Jerry Orbach. Orbach shot on the streets of New York City for twelve seasons on Law & Order, television's longest running primetime drama. Orbach was also a veteran of the New York stage. He originated the roles of El Gallo in The Fantasticks, Billy Flynn in Chicago and Julian Marsh in 42nd Street, and won the 1969 Tony award for best actor in a musical for his performance in Promises, Promises. He also appeared in several feature films shot in New York including The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight, The Sentinel, Prince of the City, Brewster’s Millions, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Delirious, and Prince of Central Park.
“I join all New Yorkers in mourning the loss of Jerry Orbach,” Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said. “A Bronx native, he was as New York as they come. Whether on stage, or on both the large and small screens, he shared New York City stories with millions around the globe. His spirit will live on in the character of Detective Lennie Briscoe from Law & Order, a beloved cop who always got his man, and I know Jerry will keep making his audiences smile.”
In tribute to Orbach, Broadway theatres dimmed their lights on December 29.
