Members of the Harlem community attend a special screening of American Gangster.
December 5, 2007 - To coincide with the recent release of American Gangster, the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, in conjunction with NBC Universal, presented a special screening of the film for the Harlem community at the AMC Magic Johnson.
It was the perfect opportunity to thank the community and local businesses for hosting the film when it shot in the neighborhood during the summer of 2006, while emphasizing the economic impact film production has on the city. American Gangster, which filmed the majority of its scenes in New York City, employed over 1000 individual New Yorkers, in addition to hiring close to 3500 local extras.
Among the groups and community leadership who attended the screening were: Community Boards 9 and 10, Harlem Business Alliance, the Harlem Arts Alliance, Harlem Chamber of Commerce, the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, the Marlboro Houses, the Apollo, the 125th Street BID, SBS, NYCHA, Manhattan Neighborhood Network, and the offices of Council Members Inez Dickens and Robert Jackson.
