The Violet Hour at the Biltmore Theatre

October 31, 2003 On October 15, 2003, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg inaugurated the reopening of the Biltmore Theatre, which had been vacant since 1987 due to extensive structural and cosmetic damage.

The Violet Hour will reopen this historic theatre on November 6 after an extensive two year restoration. The play stars Mario Cantone, Dagmara Dominczyk, Scott Foley, Robert Sean Leonard and Robin Miles. The Violet Hour tells the story of a driven young publisher at the start of his career in New York, in 1919.

The Biltmore originally opened in 1925 with the play "Easy Come, Easy Go" and was the favorite house of director George Abbott, who mounted the productions "Brother Rat" and "All That Glitters" during the 1930s. The Biltmore has been the home to many distinguished plays and musicals, including "My Sister Eileen" (1940), "The Heiress" (1947), Neil Simon’s "Barefoot in the Park" (1963) and "Hair" (1968).
