MOFTB Launches New Website

October 1, 2003 In September 2003, The New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting launched a new website designed to market the City as the ideal location for entertainment production, www.nyc.gov/film. The site was designed by Dogmatic Inc., a production and design company, and incorporates location photos in New York City taken by The Saline Project during production of "Beyond The Skyline," a short film produced by the MOFTB in 2003, to promote the City as a production location.

The new site contains a number of enhancements to the services, incentives and news provided by the Office. In addition to the availability of permit forms online implemented by Commissioner Katherine Oliver for the first time since the office was founded in 1966, a new Locations section features photos from location shoots around the City, a location of the month and a list of current film and television productions.

Commissioner Katherine Oliver said, "As our primary marketing tool, we are delighted to be offering an innovative website with a brand new menu of services and resources to the production community. This is the ideal vehicle for reaching our customers, who are visually oriented and technically savvy."

The Production News section is continually refreshed with stories about current film, television and theater productions and MOFTB marketing efforts, and accompanies new sub-sections featuring NYC film and television history and trivia, and testimonials from film productions that have recently worked in the City. Along with the Hotel Discount Program for crews in the Production Incentives section, a new Transportation/Parking section will highlight discounts on car rentals and other services utilized by production. The new Theatre section contains a resource list of rehearsal spaces for acting, dance and musical groups, and will grow as a resource for locally based theater projects. A new Links section includes links to websites for local film festivals, film schools and cultural institutions.

In addition to energizing its marketing efforts by producing the short film "Beyond the Skyline" starring Whoopi Goldberg, Harvey Keitel, Jerry Orbach, John Turturro and Kristin Davis, the MOFTB launched a newsletter in June which was simultaneously integrated with the September debut of the new website. The electronic newsletter contains abstracts of production news stories which link directly to the MOFTB website; to subscribe visit http://nyc.gov/portal/register.jsp (or by clicking on the link below) and select "NYC Film, Theatre and Broadcasting Newsletter." With the assistance of the production company @radical.media, the Office also introduced a dynamic new logo to boost its branding initiative.
