REEL 13 Turns to Politics

October 2, 2008 - REEL 13, Thirteen/WNET's weekly Saturday night filmfest, features an award-winning political indie shot entirely in New York during the 2004 Republican National Convention.

From Dumbo to Union Square to Madison Square Garden, Conventioneers, premiering Saturday, October 4 at 11:15 p.m. on REEL 13, places the city front and center in this political Romeo and Juliet story. Shot during - and inside - the actual 2004 Republican National Convention in New York, the film tells the story of a young Republican delegate (Matthew Mabe) and an old college friend (Woodwyn Koons) who is also in town to protest the event. After rekindling their friendship, they fall into an unlikely affair and begin to question their political beliefs. Director and native New Yorker Mora Stephens captures the city's raw energy during the 2004 RNC by incorporating footage of real protests, events and police round-ups. Conventioneers is the winner of a 2006 Independent Spirit Award.

REEL 13 is Thirteen's weekly movie showcase for classic, short and independent films. Every Saturday night beginning at 9 p.m., viewers can catch a Classic hosted by Neal Gabler, followed by a Short selected by visitors to Reel13.org who vote for their favorite of three shorts every week. The evening ends with an Indie, hosted by Richard Peña, Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. If you are a filmmaker and would like your short film to be considered for selection, go to Reel13.org to upload your film.
