Mumblefest at the IFC

August 1, 2007 - In August, the IFC Center is shining the spotlight on young filmmakers in their upcoming series, “The New Talkies: Generation DIY.” Running from August 22 to September 4, the festival will focus on films belonging to the genre of “Mumblecore:” - low budget productions that use improvised scripts and non-professional actors to dramatize the relationships of men and women in their 20s.

“Mumblecore” filmmakers continue to gain critical recognition worldwide for their innovative collaborative techniques. IFC Program Director Harris Dew describes, “in some ways, these films are some of the first to use the effects of the digital revolution to pursue a new kind of film aesthetics. With the filmmakers now on their second or third feaure, the movement is starting to achieve a critical mass.”

New York City is a perfect fit for the festival’s embrace of a new wave of American independent cinema. “New York is the center of film culture in the US,” commented Dew. “And the center of American independent filmmaking.”

Joe Swanberg’s Hannah Takes The Stairs, Andrew Bujalski's Funny Ha Ha, and Frank V. Ross’s Hohokam will all be screened at the “Mumblecore” festival. Many of the filmmakers will be present at the screenings and will host question & answer sessions at the films’ conclusions. A separate program entitled "Mumbleshorts" will accompany the feature film presentations.

The IFC Center is dedicated to presenting premiere independent films to the New York City community. Residing in the historic Waverly Theater on 6th Avenue, the IFC Center offers a wide range of shorts, foreign features, documentaries and independent narrative films.
