August 1, 2007 - The month of July yielded an diverse array of “Made in NY” productions participating in the “Made in NY” Marketing Credit, which provided them with free advertising space throughout the City’s five boroughs.
El Cantante, a Picturehouse film produced by and starring NYC natives Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, tells the story of Salsa king Hector Lavoe’s meteoric rise and subsequent fall. Anthony plays Lavoe and Lopez plays his wife, Pucci. El Cantante releases on August 3, 2007.
The other film promoted in July is Fox Searchlight’s psychological thriller, Joshua. The film, which won a cinematography award and was nominated for Grand Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, stars Sam Rockwell, Vera Farmiga, and newcomer Jacob Kogan. Kogan plays the title character who ultimately takes a sadistic turn when his parents (Farmiga and Rockwell) bring home a new little sister. The film released on July 6th, 2007.
A new “Made in NY” television show debuted in July to impressive critical praise and ratings. "Damages" on FX stars Glenn Close, Ted Danson, and Rose Byrne. Close plays Patty Hewes, a powerful class action litigation attorney in New York City. Ted Danson plays the defendant, Arthur Frobisher, while Byrne plays Ellen Parsons, a new addition to Hewes’ firm. "Damages" airs Tuesdays at 10PM.
On Tuesday, May 1, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg unveiled a public awareness campaign featuring a series of print and broadcast advertisements designed to combat the creation, distribution, and sale of illegally recorded films in New York City. The Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting partnered with the MPAA's anti-piracy campaign, and in doing so, allotted bus shelters throughout the five boroughs to promote these print advertisements. More Anti-piracy ads will continue to be seen throughout the city in the coming weeks, through a variety of media platforms.
