NYC Sets Go Green

July 1, 2006 -
Build It Green! NYC wants to ensure that film sets don't end up in a landfill! The environmentally-conscious retail outlet operates as both a recycling center and a building supply thrift store, providing everything from recycled lighting fixtures to windows for set designers on a variety of film productions.

Set builders and designers bring their broken-up sets to the company's offices located in Astoria, Queens so that they can be reused for other productions. Film crews can also purchase other recycled goods needed for sets, fulfilling the ultimate goal of the organization, which is to protect the environment from unnecessary waste through the reuse of building materials. Sets from the “Made in NY” film The Devil Wears Prada were recently recycled by Build It Green!, along with sets from "30 Rock," the upcoming NBC show starring Tina Fey, and the new Robin Williams film, August Rush.

“We can provide a service for film crews while also helping them save money by utilizing goods in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner,” the organization's program director, Justin Green, says. Build It Green! NYC also sells surplus and salvaged materials to the general public at a discounted price. While they currently rely on production crews to transport materials to their offices, they hope to offer an on-demand pick-up service as they expand in the future.
