July 1, 2006 - Many of Broadway's most celebrated stars came together on June 26th on the Great Lawn in Central Park to honor the achievements of acclaimed director and producer Harold Prince through song performances from some of his most famous shows at Broadway Under the Stars.
The event opened with WCBS-TV anchor Dana Tyler talking about Prince's childhood dreams of “making it big,” as young Kevin Clay performed “Something's Coming” from one of Prince's earliest successes, West Side Story. Broadway legend Elaine Stritch sang two songs, “Broadway Baby” and “Why Do I Love You?” and talked about the many productions she worked on with Prince, including Show Boat. The presence of Broadway in generations past and present was recognized with performances by Jersey Boys, the 2006 Tony Award winners for Best Musical, and Renée Elise Goldsberry, star of the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live," as well as by veteran Broadway stars Bebe Neuwirth, Christine Ebersole, and numerous other performers from current and past productions.
One of the biggest surprises of the night came with the unexpected appearance of Liza Minnelli, made famous by Harold Prince's Cabaret. All of the performers from the event gathered around the stage to congratulate Prince and present him with the city's gift, a park bench in Central Park which bears his name. As Minnelli announced, “This is a great city and Broadway is the greatest way to spend your life!”
