gangsters, divas & taxicabs

June 25, 2003. New York is the ideal setting for a story of any stripe, and the City will be populated with some new and old television characters over the next several months. David Chase, the creator of "The Sopranos," finalized a deal in mid-June with HBO to produce a sixth season of the hit show. The series will fire up production on 10 new episodes for its next season starting in early 2005, at Silvercup Studios. "The Sopranos'" fifth season will debut in March 2004.

Stay tuned for two new sitcom divas in Queens. "Whoopi," starring Whoopi Goldberg as a former diva who runs a Manhattan hotel, will begin shooting at Kaufman Astoria Studios in August 2003 and air on NBC. Kelly Ripa, who appeared for years on the New York daytime drama All My Children as Hayley Vaughan, stars in the new ABC sitcom "Hope & Faith," in which she plays a former soap actress who moves in with her sister, played by Faith Ford. "Hope and Faith" will begin shooting in August at Silvercup Studios in Long Island City. Ripa will do double duty on "Live With Regis and Kelly," retaining her spot on the chat show with Regis Philbin here in New York.

Working closely with the Taxi & Limousine Commission and HBO executive Sheila Nevins, Commissioner Katherine Oliver secured a green light for yellow cabs this spring, resulting in HBO's "Taxicab Confessions" coming back to New York City for an encore performance. The Emmy-winning reality television show will shoot in the City this summer and do all of their post-production locally, resulting in more jobs for New Yorkers. "Taxicab" originated in New York City in 1995, later moving production to Las Vegas. Welcome back!
