June 30, 2004 - New York City has some of the best locations in the world -- and so do the films that are shot here! This year, for the first time in history, a director gained permission to shoot inside the United Nations. The Interpreter, directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, is being shot in the United Nations and other locations in New York City over a period of 16 weeks.
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, worked with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to help Pollack gain access to the General Assembly room and other key areas of the United Nations.
“Our City's incredible locations simply cannot be faked on a back lot,” Commissioner Oliver said. “Here in New York, we are committed to delivering the real thing to filmmakers, whether it is gaining access to the United Nations for The Interpreter, making the Brooklyn Bridge available for Stay, or putting sheep in Central Park for Little Manhattan. In New York City, directors call the shots.”
The Interpreter, the story of an interpreter who overhears an assassination plot, will be in production in New York City through the end of July.
