Make Time for Film Festivals and More in June

June 2, 2008 - Film festivals, screenings, and more will keep you busy in the month of June.

Brooklyn International Film Festival Kicks Off
The Brooklyn International Film Festival, connecting filmmakers to distribution companies and exposing them to the media, runs until June 8. This year the festival is called CINERGY with films being shown at Brooklyn Lyceum Theater and Brooklyn Heights Cinema. The festival was established in 1998 as the first international competitive film festival in New York. For more information please visit www.brooklynfest.org.

Sundance Comes to Brooklyn
Sundance at BAM kicks off its third year with eleven days of films from the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Twenty-two features and thirty-six shorts that played at this year’s Sundance will be showcased until June 8. The program also features musical concerts, Q&As with the arts, art installations and special events. For tickets and a complete schedule, visit www.BAM.org.

Human Rights Watch International Film Festival
The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival brings tales of human struggle, sacrifice and triumph to New York audiences. Co-presented by Human Rights Watch and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the 19th annual festival will run from June 13 to 26 at the Walter Reade Theater, featuring 19 feature-length films and 13 shorts from 20 countries, including 31 New York premieres and an unprecedented 20 films by women. The festival will also showcase Youth Producing Change, nine short films made by young filmmakers from Canada, England, Senegal, South Africa, and the United States. Filmmaking in 48 Hours
The 48 Hour Film Project comes to New York City on June 20. Filmmaking teams of all levels will compete as they write, shoot, and edit their films over the course of two days. Each team receives a genre, a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue that they must work into their piece. The finished products will be screened at Landmark's Sunshine Cinema on June 25th and 26th at 7pm and 9pm. To learn more, visit www.48hourfilm.com/newyork/.

Foreign Filmmakers Prize
The Vilcek Foundation, honoring contributions of immigrants to biomedical science and arts or humanities, will present the Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in recognition of young foreign-born biomedical researchers and filmmakers who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields at early stages in their careers.

Applicants must be born abroad, be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and no more than 38 years old as of January 1, 2009. Two $25000 prizes, one in biomedical research, the other in filmmaking, will be awarded for outstanding early achievement. For information or to download the application, visit www.vilcek.org.
