Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting and Museum of the Moving Image Announce Free Panel for New York Residents on Careers in Entertainment Production

May 7, 2007 - On Sunday, May 20, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the New York City Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting will present “Careers in Entertainment Production: Paths to Opportunity”, a panel discussion at the Museum of the Moving Image, located in Astoria, Queens, 35th Avenue at 36th Street. The panel, moderated by Commissioner Katherine Oliver, features industry insiders who will discuss their experiences working in New York City’s entertainment production industry.

The panel is part of an ongoing initiative to educate New Yorkers about the various jobs which exist behind the scenes in film, television and commercial production. The Museum will be open free to the public all day, with the discussion taking place inside.

Panelists include:

Lamont Crawford, Dolly Grip (INSIDE MAN, 30 ROCK, MUNICH, SYRIANA)

Tod Maitlind, Sound Mixer (I AM LEGEND, THE PRODUCERS, SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE, MEET THE PARENTS)

Toy R. Van Lierop, Makeup Artist (HITCH, THE BEST MAN, BOWFINGER, DOCTOR DOLITTLE)

Louis Bertini, Sound Editor (SEX AND THE CITY, TRANSAMERICA, NAKED BROTHERS BAND)

Additional panelists, TBD

The panel is part of a day-long outdoor event, presented by the Museum and entitled “New York on Location”. The event offers a behind-the-scenes look at filmmaking in New York, inviting the public to tour working movie trailers and trucks, the ubiquitous studios-on-wheels that house crucial movie-making services such as make-up, wardrobe, lighting, props and electrical. Film professionals will be on hand both on the street and in the Museum to answer questions.

“New York on Location” will take place on Sunday, May 20, from 11:00am to 5:00pm on 36 Street between 34 and 35 Avenues (the street between the Museum and the Studio), which will be closed to traffic. There is no rain date. For more information, visit www.movingimage.us.

“Our local entertainment production industry employs 100,000 New Yorkers and contributes $5 billion to our economy on an annual basis,” Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting said. “As we attract new production business to the City and create new jobs through the ‘Made in NY’ incentive program, we are working to ensure that a diverse group of New Yorkers have access to these positions, through programs such as this panel, the City’s Diversity Task Force and our Production Assistant Training Program - a series of free, full-time, month-long training programs developed with Brooklyn Workforce Innovations. For more information, visit www.nyc.gov/film."

Panel seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. Please RSVP to rsvp@film.nyc.gov by Thursday, May 17th. All panelists are subject to change.
