June 1, 2007 - With all three “Law & Order”s coming back and seven New York City-based pilots getting picked up, it’s going to be a busy season for television production. Therefore, MOFTB and the DGA took the proactive step of exploring ways to keep the City’s communities film friendly.
On Saturday, May 19, MOFTB officials met with at least 50 guild members to provide updates on incentives created by the agency, the current state of the industry, to take suggestions from DGA members and to request more cooperation from film productions in all of the City’s communities.
There were several positive suggestions and ideas generated during the meeting, where MOFTB presented the many accomplishments made since 2002 -- when Commissioner Katherine Oliver first took office.
“We are taking the necessary steps to keep the city’s filming industry robust and to address residents’ needs and concerns throughout the five boroughs,” said Commissioner Oliver.
We now offer an unprecedented 15% tax credit on production costs and a 1% marketing credit that has provided more than $4.8 million in advertising on City-owned assets. We also offer our “Made in NY” Discount cards, where more that 10,000 cards have been distributed to more than 470 productions.
MOFTB also presented statistics that show employment in the city’s production industry has increased by 7% since 2004.
We are now exploring ways to keep the City film friendly for productions. Some of the options include reducing the parking presence, baffling generators, meeting with community boards, proper placement of catering, tips and information about recycling and environmentally-friendly production practices. As a direct result of this meeting, MOFTB also now provides a link to community board and Councilmember offices online, click here to learn more.
The purpose of this initiative is to provide better notification to communities and to better manage the size of the footprint in communities that serve film productions.
