NYC's Green Screen: Keeping Film Crews Environmentally Friendly

By Kwame Patterson
May 1, 2007 - The Mayor’s Office of Film Theatre & Broadcasting (MOFTB) shows its true colors with the launch of the “NYC: Green Screen” webpage.

On Wednesday, April 25, the MOFTB went live with the page, “NYC: Green Screen,” which provides tips, suggestions, resources and other environmentally friendly information for NYC productions to save energy and production costs.

Suggestions to productions include using elastic bands or string when posting resident letters or parking signs; donating, buying or selling used goods; making certain that trucks and campers fit under trees to avoid damage to branches; not letting any vehicles idle on set; renting fuel-efficient cars and donating unused equipment like food and art supplies.

Some productions are already putting this effort into practice.

"We try our best to purchase leftover office supplies and paper from other productions that are wrapping up as we're starting up. Also in the past, we have leftover set-dressing, props and other goods that we donate to a group called Furnish the Future, said Sarah Leonard, APOC from "Gossip Girl.”

Jared Smith, Location Manager said "we use e-mail more than paper. Digital script re-writes can get information to the essential people without making extra copies that go to waste."

Our office is also doing its part by going paperless whenever possible, reusing location signage, turning off computer monitors when not in use, turning off all lights in rooms that aren't in use and placing recycle bens throughout the office.

This is all part of NYC’s Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s April 22 announcement of PLANYC: A GREENER, GREATER NEW YORK. The plan is a list of sweeping policy initiatives to make New York more sustainable and eco-friendly.
