April 1, 2009 - The fifth annual NYC Mental Health Film Festival, co-sponsored by Community Access and the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS), works to raise the public’s consciousness and break down the stigma associated with mental illness. The film festival is a day of empowerment for mental health recipients and education about mental health for filmmakers.

This year, the festival will feature four films selected to fit the theme: “stomping out stigma.” All the films draw attention to the stereotypes and stigma experienced by people with psychiatric disabilities. Among the films to be screened are Smoke Alarm and Open Spaces.

The festival takes place on Saturday, April 25, from noon to 5pm at St. Francis College, 182 Remsen Street. Tickets are $5 dollars in advance and $7 at the door.
